Therapeutic Horticulture

Therapeutic Horticulture

is defined by the American Horticultural Therapy Association as a process that uses plants and plant-related activities through which participants strive to improve their well-being through active or passive involvement. This is different than Horticultural Therapy which is a more clinical process.

Therapeutic horticulture can take place in many formats and the focus is determined by participants’ needs, interests, and abilities. It can involve learning adaptive gardening strategies, education, nature-related activities, sensory stimulation and exploration, and more. I often work one-on-one or in small groups. This service benefits anyone, though I especially like to work with seniors. I also work with other people who have specific needs such as kids or those who have memory disorders or physical disabilities. I typically hold one hour sessions, but I’m open to discussing other requests.

Service description:

We start with a one hour session to meet and learn more about one another. I will be gaining information I can use to tailor a program to you and/or the intended participants’ needs. You and/or the intended participants will determine if you’d like to work with me further. If everyone involved is interested, we can schedule on a weekly, every other week, or monthly basis. Time per session is pro-rated at an hourly rate and also factors in number of participants since that impacts preparation time and materials. Service can be adjusted as needed, and I request two weeks warning if service needs to be paused or discontinued.
